  • More about Frontiers of the Roman Empire: The Eastern Frontiers: Frontieres de l'Empire Romain : Les frontieres orientales

The Roman eastern frontier extended from the Black Sea to the Red Sea, facing Parthia and Sasanian Persia. Syria or the Levant was Romes bulwark, while the Nabataean kingdom was annexed in 106. The Cappadocian frontier was in Turkey, facing extreme climate and topography, and is the major omission from this volume. The Caucasian forts along the Black Sea are also part of this volume.

The Roman eastern frontier extended from the northeastern coast of the Black Sea to the Red Sea, facing a formidable adversary, the kingdom of Parthia, and its successor, Sasanian Persia. In antiquity, Rome's stronghold was the region known as Syria or the Levant, encompassing modern-day Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, and Palestine. To the south, the Nabataean kingdom, conquered by Rome in 106, was transformed into the province of Arabia. To the north, the Cappadocian frontier was established in one of the most inaccessible and remote regions of Eurasia, characterized by extreme climate and topography, amidst a patchwork of client kingdoms. This hidden and captivating frontier in Turkey, largely concealed beneath reservoirs, is a significant omission from this volume. Nonetheless, the Caucasian forts along the Black Sea's edge are included in this volume, although they are perhaps Rome's least known frontier archaeologically. A unique account by Arrian, the governor of Cappadocia, provides insight into this lesser-known frontier.
