In 1912, Italy occupied the Ottoman town of Rhodes, which was home to a diverse population of Greek Orthodox, Muslims, Jews, and Catholics. Following the Treaty of Lausanne in 1923, Rhodes became a territory of Italy's empire, just one year after Mussolini seized power in Rome. The decline of the Ottoman Empire coincided with the expansion of fascist imperialism in the Mediterranean. Both the Ottoman Young Turks and Italian colonial governors utilized the role of a new generation of youth in their imperial rule.

Generations of Empire delves into the intricate relationship between the state and society, exploring the transformative effects of imperial rule on Italian colonialism. Andreas Guidi examines how the transition from an autocratic to a constitutional empire in the late Ottoman years to Italian military occupation and fascist annexation impacted communal life in Rhodes. Drawing on archival sources from five different countries and in seven different languages, the book explores generational dynamics in various domains, including political activism, family, education, work, leisure, and mobility. Through its detailed analysis, Generations of Empire provides a captivating portrayal of how a local society navigated significant social and political transformations in the modern Mediterranean.
