  • More about Geology of Cuba

Cuba's geological cartography has evolved over 135 years, from the Geological Sketch of the Cuban Island to the Digital Geological Map of Cuba. The country has a geological mosaic with rocks from many different origins, from Proterozoic to Quaternary, extended along the southern border of the North American plate. The fossil record of Cuba is rich in varied fossils, witnessing a wide diversity of organisms. Forty-one models and eight sub-models of metallic mineral deposits were identified, and ten mineral systems were linked to the geodynamic environments present in the Cuban territory. Cuba has large deposits of limestone, loam, dolomite, kaolin, gypsum and anhydrite, rock salt, marbles, sands and clays of different types, zeolites, peat, therapeutic peloids and many more.

Cuba's geological cartography has evolved over 135 years, drawing from archival reports, publications, maps, and personal interviews with experienced authors and geologists. A critical analysis of the country's geological knowledge since the Geological Sketch of the Cuban Island at 1: 2 000 000 scale in 1883 is presented. This map marked the beginning of geological exploration in Cuba and Ibero-America. The Digital Geological Map of Cuba at 1: 100 000 scale in 2016 showcases the latest advancements. Cuba and its surroundings are a geological mosaic, with rocks from various origins spanning Proterozoic to Quaternary. The Eocene period saw the formation of the Cuban Metallogenic Map at 1: 250 000 scale, identifying forty-one models and eight sub-models of metallic mineral deposits. These models, characterized by descriptive-genetic analysis, were used to map ten mineral systems associated with geodynamic environments in Cuba. This comprehensive study highlights Cuba's rich geological heritage and contributes to our understanding of the region's mineral resources.
