George Tsutakawa (1910–97) is a renowned Northwest artist of his generation, celebrated worldwide for his sculpture and fountain designs. However, a lesser-known facet of his artistic journey is his production of blockprints, watercolors, and works on paper, which began in the 1920s and continued throughout his career. Hailing from Seattle and receiving his education in Japan, Tsutakawa achieved early success while still in high school. He furthered his artistic studies at the University of Washington, earning an MFA in sculpture in 1950. From 1947 to 1976, he held a prominent position as an influential instructor at the university's School of Art, leaving a lasting impact on the art community.
The majority of the artworks showcased in this exhibition are drawn from the Tsutakawa estate and have never been publicly exhibited before. These early works serve as a testament to the concepts and inspirations that shaped Tsutakawa's aesthetic throughout his illustrious career. To provide a broader perspective on his oeuvre, contextual works by his instructors and contemporaries are also included in the exhibition.
The Cascadia Art Museum is proud to present this exclusive exhibition, offering a unique opportunity to explore the artistic legacy of George Tsutakawa. The exhibition will be on display from December 1, 2022, to March 26, 2023.
