Elizabeth Strout, a master storyteller, delves into the intricate dynamics of young love and the allure of wealth in her captivating tale, "Glimpses of the Moon." Set during the Gilded Age in New York, the story revolves around Nick Lansing and Susy Branch, two young individuals with undeniable charm and attractiveness, yet lacking financial stability. Despite their privileged connections within high society, they lack the wealth to sustain their lifestyle. However, when fate brings them together, Susy ingeniously devises a plan: they will marry and embark on a year-long European adventure, staying in the homes of their wealthy friends and relying on honeymoon gifts to sustain them.
Initial hopes of an idyllic honeymoon quickly give way to jealous passions and troubled consciences, unraveling the facade of their perfect union. With Edith Wharton's signature wit, "Glimpses of the Moon" unfolds as a tartly amusing story of social climbing and romantic misadventure. Part of the Pushkin Press Classics series, this timeless masterpiece showcases the exceptional storytelling abilities of one of America's greatest writers.
Edith Wharton, born into a wealthy and socially prominent family in New York, defied societal expectations by pursuing her passion for writing from an early age. Despite facing resistance from her family, she married Edward Teddy Wharton, a Boston banker, in 1885. However, Wharton gradually grew dissatisfied with the traditional roles of wife and society matron, yearning for more freedom and independence. In 1907, she and her husband moved to Paris, where Wharton found solace and artistic inspiration. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1913, but Wharton remained in France, her beloved adoptive home, until her passing in 1937.
Through "Glimpses of the Moon," Elizabeth Strout pays homage to the legacy of Edith Wharton, capturing the essence of her wit, social commentary, and profound understanding of human nature. The story serves as a reminder that love, despite its complexities, can transcend societal boundaries and that the pursuit of personal fulfillment and happiness should never be compromised.
