The author examines the relationship between God and the state, exploring theistic accounts of political authority and the role of God in classical liberalism, Marxism, and postliberalism. They raise objections to each theory and articulate desiderata for theists seeking political frameworks.

The relationship between God and the state is a complex and multifaceted topic that has been debated for centuries. While some argue that the existence of robust political authority can be evidence for God's existence, others contend that there are alternative explanations for the emergence of political power. In this Element, we will explore these questions, both pro and con, by examining various major positions.

At the start of the volume, we will defend a political argument for God's existence. We will argue that the existence of a powerful and stable political order is not merely a coincidence but is instead evidence of a higher power's existence. We will draw on a range of philosophical and theological sources to support our argument, including the works of Plato, Aristotle, Augustine, and Aquinas.

Having motivated a theistic account of political authority, we will then discuss the role that God plays or could play in classical liberalism, Marxism, and postliberalism. While we will sympathetically survey each political theory in turn, we will also raise various objections to the view being discussed. For example, we will question whether classical liberalism is compatible with the idea of divine command theory, which holds that God is the ultimate source of moral law. We will also consider whether Marxism is capable of providing a coherent account of the role of God in human history.

Finally, at the end of the Element, we will articulate desiderata for theists who are looking for political frameworks. We will argue that theists should seek to develop political theories that are consistent with their religious beliefs and that are capable of addressing the challenges of contemporary society. We will also suggest that theists should be open to engaging with other political ideologies and perspectives in order to develop more nuanced and effective political strategies.

In conclusion, the relationship between God and the state is a complex and multifaceted topic that requires careful consideration and analysis. While some argue that the existence of robust political authority can be evidence for God's existence, others contend that there are alternative explanations for the emergence of political power. By examining various major positions and raising objections to each view, we can better understand the complexities of this topic and develop more effective political frameworks that are consistent with our religious beliefs and values.
