The Great Western Castles were a successful locomotive design by Charles Collett in 1923, with 155 constructed between 1923 and 1950. Many were modernized with increased superheat and double-chimneys in the late 1950s, and the class continued to be the mainstay of Western Region express passenger services until replaced by the WR diesel hydraulic fleet in the early 1960s. This book covers their design, history, operation, and performance, with 350 photographs and 23 detailed Swindon technical drawings.

The Great Western Castles were a remarkable achievement in locomotive design during the 20th century, renowned for their exceptional performance and efficiency. These magnificent machines were conceived by Charles Collett in 1923, drawing inspiration from the 1907 Churchward Star class. A total of 155 Castles were constructed almost continuously, with only a brief interruption during the war years, between 1923 and 1950. In addition, fifteen rebuilt Stars and one rebuilt from the Great Bear Pacific were also produced. Many of these locomotives underwent modernizations in the late 1950s, featuring increased superheat and double chimneys, ensuring they remained at the forefront of Western Region express passenger services to destinations such as the West Country, South Wales, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, and the West Midlands. However, their reign came to an end with the introduction of the WR diesel hydraulic fleet in the early 1960s.
This comprehensive book delves into the design and history of the Great Western Castles. Authored by Bob Meanley, who played a pivotal role in the restoration of the Castles Earl of Mount Edgcumbe and Clun Castle at Tyseley Works, it provides a detailed account of their development, operation, and remarkable performance throughout the decades. David Maidment, who had firsthand experience working with the class between 1957 and 1962, also contributes his personal anecdotes and observations, offering a unique perspective from his early encounters with these iconic locomotives.
The book is adorned with an impressive collection of 350 photographs, many of which are in color, capturing the beauty and elegance of these remarkable machines. Additionally, 23 detailed Swindon technical drawings further enhance the reader's understanding of the Castles' intricate design and engineering.
The Great Western Castles' legacy continues to be celebrated, and this book serves as a valuable resource for enthusiasts, historians, and anyone with an interest in the world of steam locomotives. It is a testament to the ingenuity and craftsmanship of the engineers and designers who brought these iconic locomotives to life, and it provides a captivating glimpse into the golden age of rail travel.
