Glory and Exile: Haida History Robes of Jut-ke-Nay Hazel Wilson
This remarkable exhibition presents the first-ever comprehensive view of the monumental cycle of ceremonial robes created by the renowned Haida artist Jut-Ke-Nay (The One People Speak Of), also known as Hazel Anna Wilson.Spanning 51 large blankets, Wilson skillfully weaves together traditional stories, autobiography, and poignant commentary on events such as smallpox epidemics and environmental destruction to craft a grand narrative that celebrates the resilience and survival of the Haida people. At the same time, it challenges the colonial histories of the Northwest Coast.
Over her illustrious career, Wilson produced countless robes, but her most iconic and significant work is the untitled series showcased here. From the outset, she envisioned these blankets as public art, intended for widespread visibility and understanding. To enhance the impact of her striking imagery, the volume includes essays by Robert Kardosh and Robin Laurence, as well as texts by Wilson herself, providing historical and personal context for the people, characters, and places that inhabit her colossal creation.
Glory and Exile pays tribute to the extraordinary achievements of an artist whose vision will ensure the persistence of Haida knowledge for many generations to come. The exhibition also features personal recollections by Wilson's daughter, Kūn Jaad Dana Simeon, her brother Allan Wilson, and Haida curator and artist Nika Collison, adding depth and intimacy to the narrative.
