  • More about Hazelnut Grove

The Hazelnut Grove is a story of a young professional couple who traded their comfortable life for a derelict house in northwest Italy. Their journey is filled with joys and challenges, including a menacing neighbor, the deaths of beloved animals, and the loneliness of getting to grips with an unfamiliar language and culture. Despite these obstacles, they discover a respect for the materials and objects of Italian life and become artists. The book is set in Piedmont, renowned for its wine and food, and tells a story of abundance and thriving against all odds.

Sarah and Luke, a young professional couple, yearned for a different and more self-sufficient life. They exchanged the comfort of a two-bedroom English cottage for a dilapidated house in northwest Italy. The Hazelnut Grove delves into the joys and challenges of pursuing a dream life.

Sarah and Luke's chosen path is a blend of fairy tale and a tale of courage and self-reliance. Their new neighbor, nicknamed il Cattivo, the nasty one, decides to wage war over the desolate hazelnut grove, a two-meter strip of land behind their house. Their story is interspersed with anecdotes from the author's family's holiday cottage in rural France.

As events unfold, particularly Sarah, who does not share Luke's Italian heritage, a picture emerges of how the Italian life has tested Sarah and how she discovered within herself both a grand obstinacy and a respect for the materials and objects of that life. A rusting metal chunk becomes, in Sarah's eyes, an artifact with potential. Sarah becomes an artist.

Set in Piedmont, renowned for its wine and food, a story of abundance and thriving slowly emerges against the challenges of a menacing neighbor, the deaths of beloved animals, and the loneliness of getting to grips with an unfamiliar language and culture. When asked by English friends, "Would you ever move back home again?" Luke and Sarah can only answer: "We are home."
