In a fictional United Kingdom, HellSans reigns supreme as the ubiquitous typeface, enforced by the government in all forms of communication and public spaces. It holds ultimate control, shaping the lives of the majority who find joy in its presence. However, a minority exists who are allergic to HellSans. These individuals, known as the HellSans Allergic (HSAs), face persecution and are forced to live on the streets or in ghettos on the outskirts of the capital city.
At the helm of the company that manufactures the Inex, a cyborg doll-like creature that has replaced smartphones as the essential aid and accessory, stands Jane Ward. She possesses fame and fortune, until an unexpected illness strikes her, rendering her allergic to HellSans. Caught in the intricate web of government power struggles, Jane loses her job and wealth, finding herself stranded in the ghetto until the intervention of Dr. Icho Smith.
Dr. Smith, a scientist who has developed a cure for the HellSans allergy, is a fugitive on the run from both the government and the Seraphs, a ghetto "terrorist group" with their own agendas for the cure. Jane and Dr. Smith join forces, driven by a shared mission to expose government corruption and bring the cure to the HSAs.
HellSans is divided into three parts, each offering a unique perspective on the lives of the haves and have-nots as the story unfolds toward a revolutionary conclusion. Part one and part two can be read in either order, providing a distinctive approach to the differing viewpoints of the privileged and oppressed in the lead-up to the climactic resolution.
This captivating tale explores the power of typography, the consequences of government control, and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity. It serves as a dystopian nightmare, a cautionary tale about the dangers of unchecked authority. Nevertheless, it also offers a glimmer of hope, showcasing the power of friendship, collaboration, and the pursuit of truth and justice.
