Henry Swanzy, a prominent figure in Caribbean writing since the post-1950s era, holds an unparalleled position as a midwife. His significant contributions include serving as the editor of the BBC Caribbean Voices program from 1946 to 1956, during which he witnessed the flourishing careers of renowned writers such as George Lamming, Edgar Mittelholzer, Jan Carew, V.S. Naipaul, Sam Selvon, and many others in London. Swanzy's program, primarily targeted at a Caribbean audience, championed writing that remained true to its Caribbean roots, encompassing language, themes, and social concerns. As an Irishman, Swanzy retained a post-colonial sensibility, demonstrating a positive sympathy towards the nationalist essence of Caribbean writing. His deep respect for writers extended to offering both literary and personal support, particularly addressing their financial needs.

After Caribbean Voices gained momentum, it was entrusted to Caribbean editors, including Mittelholzer and V.S. Naipaul, while Swanzy himself relocated to Ghana in 1956 to foster and nurture writers and broadcasting in that region. The legacy of Swanzy's generosity is evident through the availability of his private and candid diaries from that period, known as "Ichabod." These diaries have been meticulously edited, documented, and introduced by the team of Niblett, Campbell, and Smith. This book serves as a vital, engaging, and thoroughly readable resource for anyone with a remote interest in the evolution of Caribbean writing. Notably, the extensive appendix compiled by Niblett et al. provides a comprehensive list of all the writers mentioned in the diary, serving as a salutary reminder of the abundant writing talent that flourished in both the Caribbean and Ghana during that period.
