Six days before the National Democratic Convention was to be held in Houston, Texas, a lynching took place, casting a shadow over the city. Fort Worth Star Telegram reporter Phillis Flanagan was present on the scene, documenting the city's efforts to rid itself of the disgrace as 25,000 visitors descended upon Houston for the four-day convention. Among the 500 journalists in attendance were notable figures such as Will Rogers, H. L. Mencken, Damon Runyan, Louella Parsons, and Will Durant, who had much to say about national politics, Houston residents, and the city's notorious weather.

During the convention, Phillis gained an intimate insight into the struggles faced by women in politics and the city's attempt to cover up the shameful crime. She painfully realized that some news stories could never be written, as the truth remained hidden behind a veil of silence.

This event marked a significant moment in American history, highlighting the ongoing struggle for racial equality and the power of journalism to expose the truth. Phillis Flanagan's reporting played a crucial role in bringing attention to the issue and shedding light on the city's attempts to conceal the truth.
