As a pioneer in the field of Piezoelectric Actuators, I have played a significant role in commercializing a wide range of products over the past 45 years. These products include million-selling devices, micro-ultrasonic motors for smartphone camera modules by Samsung Electromechanics, piezoelectric transformers for backlight inverters by Apple laptops, multilayer PZT actuators for diesel injection valves by Denso Corporation, and piezoelectric energy harvesting modules for Programmable Air-Burst Munition by the US Army.

During the development of piezoelectric actuators and transformers, I encountered a significant challenge: the generation of heat during high-power driving conditions. This limitation posed a bottleneck in device miniaturization. To address this issue, I worked in parallel to develop various high-power density piezo-ceramic materials, with a focus on clarifying their loss mechanisms.

With this understanding, I believed it was time to compile my previous studies and insights into a textbook that would inspire and educate younger generations about the potential for reaching energy densities of up to 100 W/cm3 in the future. In today's 21st-century society, there is a growing emphasis on increasing efficiency, saving energy, and reducing space (compactness). These objectives are crucial in fostering a sustainable future.

High-Power Piezoelectrics and Loss Mechanisms provides a comprehensive introduction to the theoretical foundations of piezoelectrics, electromechanical phenomena, loss mechanisms, practical materials, device designs, drive and characterization techniques, and typical applications. While this book does not serve as an exhaustive review of the field, it focuses on key and fundamental ideas that align with my development philosophy. These ideas aim to provide a deeper understanding of how to design and develop high-power piezoelectric materials and devices.

This textbook is designed with self-learning in mind, making it accessible to individuals interested in expanding their knowledge in this area. It serves as a valuable resource for students, researchers, and professionals seeking to advance their understanding of high-power piezoelectrics and their applications.

In conclusion, High-Power Piezoelectrics and Loss Mechanisms is a groundbreaking textbook that offers a comprehensive and insightful exploration of the field of piezoelectrics. By presenting key concepts and principles through my development philosophy, this book aims to inspire and educate younger generations, enabling them to contribute to the advancement of high-power piezoelectrics and their applications in the 21st-century sustainable society.
