Hillier: Selected Works presents a comprehensive compilation of the design work of the husband-and-wife team of J. Robert and Barbara A. Hillier, spanning a remarkable 25-year period. Alongside this visual retrospective, the book delves into the rich history of the Hillier practice of architecture, spanning over 57 years of operation. Despite unconventional paths to architecture, both Hilliers have enjoyed exhilarating careers, growing the firm to 500 people and executing nearly 4,000 projects in 27 U.S. States and 34 Foreign Countries. The exceptional quality of the firm's work has been recognized with over 350 design awards.

The selected projects showcased in this monograph are meticulously crafted through a disciplined programming process, which then seeks to harmonize all the diverse forces at play on a project. These forces include culture, climate, site, economics, market, and even politics. The resulting architecture stands as a testament to its time, place, and client, transcending specific language or style conventions.

In 2008, Hillier Architecture, then one of the largest firms in the USA, merged with a foreign firm, creating the third-largest architectural firm globally. This strategic move further solidified the Hilliers' reputation as industry leaders. Subsequently, in 2012, Studio Hillier emerged as the current iteration of the firm. More recently, NJIT's College of Architecture and Design was renamed the J. Robert and Barbara A. Hillier College of Architecture and Design, in honor of the Hilliers' unwavering commitment to promoting more equitable access to design education.

Through their collective body of work and dedication to architectural excellence, J. Robert and Barbara A. Hillier have left an indelible mark on the landscape of architectural design, inspiring future generations of architects and shaping the built environment for generations to come.
