- More about Himmel, Erde, Kunst: The Art-in-Nature Project at Sch?nthal Monastery
The Schonthal Monastery, located in the Swiss Jura mountains near Basel, has a rich history dating back to 1187. It was a Benedictine convent until the Reformation, but it was abolished in 1529. The estate later fell to the city of Basel and was used as a farm. In 1986, the entire estate was sold again, and the buildings were restored and remodelled to host the art-in-nature project Sculpture at Schonthal. Since its opening in 2000, the place has become a venue for exhibitions, art education, seminars, concerts, and performances featuring local and internationally renowned artists. The new book Sculpture at Schonthal presents this unique place and project comprehensively.

The Schonthal Monastery is nestled within the picturesque surroundings of the Swiss Jura mountains, located near Basel. Its Romanesque chapel was consecrated in 1187, and another document from 1266 mentions the establishment of a Benedictine convent at Schonthal. However, during the reformation, the monastery was abolished in 1529. Subsequently, the estate passed into the hands of the city of Basel, where it was used as a farm and later became a private property in 1836. In 1986, the entire estate was sold once again, and the buildings underwent extensive restoration efforts. The grounds and surrounding landscape were also partially remodelled to host the art-in-nature project Sculpture at Schonthal. Since its opening in 2000, the monastery has evolved into a vibrant venue for exhibitions, art education, seminars, concerts, and performances, featuring both local and internationally renowned artists. The new book Sculpture at Schonthal provides a comprehensive overview of this unique place and project.
