Jahrhundert nicht nur eine lange literarische Tradition, sondern war auch seit 1620 in verschiedenen Formen des Schauspiels präsent. Früh spielte dabei Musik eine Rolle, indem sie zur Beschreibung des damals noch unerreichten und unbekannten Schauplatzes ihre Verwendung fand. Bedeutsam für die Gestaltung dieser Musik war bis ins 18. Jahrhundert hinein die Vorstellung der Sphärenharmonie.
