  • More about Hispanic-Anglosphere from the Eighteenth to the Twentieth Century: An Introduction

The book "Hispanic-Anglosphere: Britain and the Global Hispanic World, 1750-1914" challenges the portrayal of the Hispanic and Anglo worlds as antagonistic and alien to each other, highlighting the interactions between individuals, transnational networks, and global communities that made the British Isles a crucial hub for the global Hispanic world. It offers insights on various themes such as trade, the arts, education, language, politics, the press, religion, biodiversity, philanthropy, anti-slavery, and imperialism through ten case-studies, 25 biographies, and seven samples of interpreted material culture.

The portrayal of the Hispanic and Anglo worlds as opposing and alien to each other in Western culture is a common narrative. However, this book presents a fresh and critical conceptual framework, the 'Hispanic-Anglosphere', to challenge this notion. By examining the often surprising interactions of individuals, transnational networks, and global communities, it argues that the British Isles, comprising England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, the Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man, played a pivotal role in the global Hispanic world during the late eighteenth to early twentieth centuries. This period, much like today, was characterized by social uncertainty, pandemics, the dislocation of global polities, and the rise of radical ideologies.

The volume offers insightful perspectives on various themes, including trade, the arts, education, language, politics, the press, religion, biodiversity, philanthropy, anti-slavery, and imperialism. Established academics and emerging scholars from diverse continents and disciplines have collaborated to produce a rich collection of ten case studies, 25 biographies, and seven samples of interpreted material culture. These materials are presented in an accessible style, appealing to scholars, students, and the general reader alike.
