- More about History of Sinai
Lina Eckenstein (1857–1931) worked with Flinders Petrie at Saqqara, Abydos, and elsewhere from 1903 to 1906. This 1921 publication was inspired by her experiences at the site of Serabit in the Sinai peninsula. It describes the history of the region from the prehistoric period to the nineteenth century, suggesting that the inhospitable landscape and climate dissuaded large-scale permanent settlement until the first hermit and monastic communities of the Christian era.

Lina Eckenstein, a renowned feminist, medievalist, and political theorist, dedicated her excavation seasons from 1903 to 1906 to collaborating with Flinders Petrie, whose wife, Hilda, was a close friend. This remarkable publication emerged in 1921, drawing inspiration from her experiences at the site of Serabit in the Sinai Peninsula. Eckenstein aptly describes it as a captivating little history, aimed at those with a deep interest in reconstructing the past and tracing the progressive stages of religious development. The narrative unfolds from the prehistoric era, where the inhospitable landscape and climate deterred large-scale permanent settlement until the emergence of the first hermit and monastic communities during the Christian era. Despite the allure of turquoise and copper resources, the Egyptians were initially drawn to these regions. The story continues to unfold until the nineteenth century, providing a comprehensive account of the historical and religious landscape of Serabit.
