The interpretation of force in Homer's Iliad has long been a subject of debate among readers, with Simone Weil famously declaring it to be the poem's central theme. This book aims to address this issue by providing a comprehensive examination of the language of force in the Iliad from both philological and philosophical perspectives. Throughout each chapter, the book explores the various manifestations of Iliadic force in conjunction with its reception in the French intellectual tradition. Ultimately, this book demonstrates that the different terms for force in the Iliad convey distinct relationships between self and other. At the same time, the book reveals how the Iliad as a whole undermines the very forces that characters within the poem strive to establish. By studying force in the Iliad, this study offers an opportunity to reevaluate human subjectivity in Homeric poetry.
