Sophronios, a highly educated monk and prolific writer, was born in Damascus around 560. He dedicated his life to traveling throughout the Eastern Roman Empire, advocating for the doctrines of the Council of Chalcedon (451). His literary works, including his Homilies, poetry, biographies, and miracle accounts, serve as a testament to his unwavering commitment to Orthodoxy and the Christian way of life. During his brief tenure as patriarch of Jerusalem (634–638), he witnessed the fall of the Holy City to the Arab army. In his Nativity Sermon (634), delivered amidst the siege of Bethlehem and the restriction of his congregation from participating in the annual procession from Jerusalem to the birthplace of Christ, Sophronios vividly portrayed the approach of Islamic forces. His sermons also targeted pagans, Jews, and despised heretics of various denominations. This English translation of Sophronios' Homilies is based on a newly revised edition of the Byzantine Greek text, making it the first English rendering of these influential sermons.
