The debut collection of Priests, Horsepower, is a cinematic escape narrative that offers a radical reimagining of a daughters rebelliousness. Spanning across the books three sequences, we witness the black-girl speaker embarking on a self-imposed exile, journeying back in memory to explore her younger self - a mixed-race child raised by her white supremacist grandfather amidst the backdrop of Churchill Downs, the world-renowned horseracing track in Kentucky. As she arrives at a state of self-awareness, she confronts the personal and political landscape of a harshly segregated Louisville.

Nestled within a space that blends southern and urban elements, violence and beauty, racial tensions and working-class realities, the speaker strives to transcend her social and economic circumstances. Throughout the collection, Priest employs a horse as a metaphysical engine of flight, guiding us toward the liberation of embracing our wildness. Unlike the traditional Bildungsroman, Priest presents a non-linear narrative, where the speaker lacks the freedom to come of age naively in the urban South. Instead, she is compelled to possess the wisdom gained from observing "the horses and their restless minds" from the very beginning.

Through this introspective exploration, the speaker delves into the complexities of identity, race, and societal expectations, challenging the norms and breaking free from the constraints imposed upon her. Horsepower serves as a testament to the power of storytelling, offering a unique and captivating perspective on the human experience.
