- More about How Capitalism Forms Our Lives
This book reconsiders capitalism as a "form of life" that shapes our relationships, sense of self, and actions in the material world. It proposes "form of life" as a heuristic tool to connect different literatures and emphasizes economic practices as an integral dimension of life. It offers an alternative to analyses that position neoliberalism as an economic logic imposed upon the social and cultural.

The authors in this volume redefine capitalism by embracing the concept of it as a "form of life," which encompasses its mechanisms and impacts on our bodies and our shared existence. It is evident that capitalism extends beyond a mere economic system and permeates various aspects of our lives, shaping our relationships with others, our self-perception, and our abilities and actions in the material world. However, attempts to address the profound inequalities, inherent exploitation, alienation, and the detrimental effects of capitalism on the environment often fail to fully acknowledge the intricate connections between the economic, social, cultural, ethical, ontological, and phenomenological realms. This volume seeks to bridge the gap between these literatures by employing the concept of "form of life" as a heuristic tool, bringing together Frankfurt School, neo-materialism, Wittgenstein's philosophy, Foucault's and Agamben's biopolitics, and Marx's discussions of reproduction. By focusing on economic practices rather than capitalism as a system, the authors redefine "the economic" as an essential and interconnected dimension of life, opening up new avenues for critique. Moreover, viewing human beings as "economic bios" offers a valuable alternative to analyses that portray neoliberalism as an economic logic imposed upon the social and cultural.
