This study compares and contrasts the Roman and Hunnic fighting men of the 5th century AD, who fought with sophisticated tactics and powerful bows. The Huns, a formidable force in the 4th century AD, burst onto the scene of Western European history. Known for their skilled horsemanship and advanced tactics, they employed powerful bows to great effect. Their reputation for close-quarters combat was well-established. In contrast, the Roman Army fielded a diverse range of cavalry units, including heavily armed and armored clibanarii and cataphractii, as well as horse archers and missile cavalry. These troops were drawn from various client peoples and cultures, including the Huns themselves. After establishing a vast polyglot empire in eastern and central Europe, the Huns repeatedly invaded Roman territory, besieging the city of Naissus in 443. Faced with the threat of Constantinople, the Romans agreed to pay a substantial indemnity.

In 447, Attila re-entered Roman territory, engaging the Romans in the pivotal battle of the Utus in Bulgaria. Although the Huns laid siege to Constantinople, they were unable to capture the city. In 451, Hunnic forces invaded the Western Roman Empire, prompting a Roman general, Aetius, to lead a pursuit. The two sides clashed in the decisive battle at the Catalaunian Plains, marking a significant turning point in the conflict.

This comprehensive study, fully illustrated with specially commissioned artwork and maps, delves into the origins, fighting methods, and reputations of the Roman and Hunnic cavalry forces. It provides a detailed examination of key events such as the siege of Naissus, the battle of the Utus, and the climactic encounter at the Catalaunian Plains. Through its rich content and visual representations, the study offers valuable insights into the complex dynamics of this historical period and the remarkable achievements of the two cavalry armies.
