The ancient Chinese text known as the Yi-jing, or I Ching, is a divination and prophecy work that dates back 2,500 years. It is known as the Book of Changes. It is conventionally used by performing intricate rituals of dropping bundles of dried grass stalks. The 64 symbols known as hexagrams that are formed when six stalks are dropped represent every conceivable combination of broken and unbroken stalks. The Book of Changes explains how to read the hexagrams to determine the best course of action or approach in a particular circumstance.
The 64 hexagrams and their subsequent interpretations, including the Judgment, written by King Wen in the 12th Century BCE, The Commentary and The Image (both attributed to Confucius, 6th–5th Century BCE), and The Lines, written by King Wens son, are featured in I Ching Illustrated. The Lines are accompanied by modern interpretive writings. This book, which is exquisitely produced in traditional Chinese binding with 75 illustrations, makes the ideal gift edition and will enable anybody interested in the Eastern traditional philosophies to follow in Confucius' footsteps and use the I Ching to predict their fate.
