Tua Forsström, a visionary Finland-Swedish poet, has emerged as Finland's most celebrated contemporary poet. Her poetry, infused with the sonorous and plangent melodies of Finland's landscapes, strives to find harmony between the troubled human heart and the endangered natural world. Her twelfth book of poetry, "I walked on into the forest," marks her first publication since "One Evening in October I Rowed Out on the Lake" (2012/2015), the collection that followed her renowned trilogy, "I studied once at a wonderful faculty" (2003), published in English translation by Bloodaxe in 2006. In a sense, this new book continues the themes explored in the previous collection, with a heightened focus on themes of death and grief, particularly the devastating loss of her beloved granddaughter. It reveals a subtle shift in Tua Forsström's poetic tone, moving imperceptibly towards a new and harsh gravity. As the August Prize jury commented on her work as a whole, her poetry is characterized by a melancholic and impassioned expression, depicting a relentless struggle against meaninglessness, disintegration, and destruction—against the very essence of death in life.
