This open-access book presents the exciting research results of the BMBF-funded project iCity, carried out at the University of Applied Science Stuttgart, with the aim of helping cities become more livable, intelligent, and sustainable. The research was pursued from 2017 to 2020 in collaboration with industry partners and NGOs.

A LIScity is characterized by its increasing digital networking, efficient resource utilization, and implementation of intelligent mobility concepts. It ensures a substantial proportion of renewable energy for its grid-bound infrastructure. Intelligent cities are increasingly focused on human well-being, integration, and flexibility, placing citizens at the center of development efforts to enhance quality of life.

The articles in this book explore research that aligns with these criteria. The book covers various fields, including energy, mobility, information platforms, and buildings and city planning.

In the realm of energy, the research focuses on algorithms for heating and energy storage systems, simulation programs for thermal local heating supply, runtime optimization of combined heat and power (CHP), natural ventilation, and more.

Mobility research encompasses charging distribution and deep learning, innovative emission-friendly mobility, routing apps, zero-emission urban logistics, augmented reality, artificial intelligence for individual route planning, mobility behavior, and more.

Information platforms involve 3DCity models in city planning, augmented reality for windy cities, internet of things (IoT) monitoring to visualize device performance, storing and visualizing dynamic energy data of smart cities, and more.

Buildings and city planning research focuses on sound insulation of sustainable facades and balconies, multi-camera mobile systems for tunnel inspection, building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) as active façade elements, common space, and the potential of building envelopes in smart sustainable cities.

Overall, this book showcases the cutting-edge research and innovative solutions that contribute to the development of livable, intelligent, and sustainable cities.
