  • More about In Her Hands: Women's Fight against AIDS in the United States

In Her Hands explores how women have fought for recognition as HIV/AIDS vulnerable individuals and lived with the disease since the 1980s, focusing on five arenas: transmission and recognition, reproductive justice, safer sex campaigns, the carceral state, and HIV prevention and treatment. It argues that women protesting neglect risked punitive intervention, emphasizing the need to protect fetuses and children.

Since the 1980s, women have employed a variety of tactics to advocate for their recognition as HIV/AIDS-vulnerable individuals and to live with the disease in various contexts. In Her Hands takes a fresh chronological and thematic approach to studying the US epidemic, examining five areas of women's AIDS activism: transmission and recognition, reproductive justice, safer sex campaigns for queer women, the carceral state, and HIV prevention and treatment. By doing so, the book extends the historical understanding of women's experiences with AIDS by moving beyond their exclusion from the initial medical response and the role women played as supporters of gay men. The book also argues that women who protested the neglect of their healthcare needs always risked punitive intervention on behalf of the symbolic needs of fetuses and children, as well as wider society, deemed to need protecting from them.
