The potato crop failure in 1846 led to a famine winter in Scotland, causing starvation and death. The export of grain by farmers and landlords was blamed on the soaring price of oatmeal, leading to protests and concessions. James Hunter's book brings these events to life, offering a timely reminder of the importance of affordable food.

When Scotland's potato crop was devastated by blight in 1846, the country faced a catastrophic crisis. In the Hebrides and the West Highlands, a massive relief effort arrived too late to prevent starvation and death. Meanwhile, towns and villages from Aberdeen to Wick and Thurso erupted in protest against the soaring price of oatmeal, which replaced potatoes as the primary foodstuff for people. The soaring cost of oatmeal was attributed to farmers and landlords cashing in on even higher prices elsewhere, leading to widespread anger and frustration.

As a harsh winter loomed, families feared a repeat of the devastating famine that was ravaging Ireland. Grain carts were seized, ships boarded, harbors blockaded, a jail was forced open, and the military was confronted. The army fired on one group of rioters, while savage sentences were imposed on others. However, thousands-strong crowds also secured significant concessions. Above all, they won cheaper food.

These dramatic events have long been ignored or forgotten, but now, in the historian James Hunter, they have their voice. Hunter's story is a powerful blend of emotion, anger, and inspiration, particularly in the context of food banks and growing poverty. It serves as a reminder of the resilience and determination of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
