  • More about Interpreting Medieval Effigies: The Evidence from Yorkshire to 1400

This study examines and analyzes the wealth of evidence provided by the monumental effigies of Yorkshire, from the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, including some of very high sculptural merit. More than 200 examples survive, presenting a picture of the people who could afford them at a time when the county was frequently at the forefront of national politics and administration. Stylistic analysis of the effigies is employed to understand how they relate to one another and give a firmer basis for their dating and production patterns. The corpus is of sufficient size to permit meaningful analysis to shed light on aspects such as personal aspiration, social networks, patterns of supply and production, piety, and wealth.

This groundbreaking study delves into and analyzes the wealth of evidence provided by the monumental effigies of Yorkshire, dating from the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. These effigies, some of exceptional sculptural merit, showcase a remarkable level of realism, depicting individuals as they wished to be remembered. Accompanied by a vast amount of contemporary sculptural and architectural detail, these monuments offer a glimpse into the lives of those who could afford them during a period when Yorkshire played a prominent role in national politics and administration, particularly during the Scottish wars.

Stylistic analysis of the effigies has been employed to understand their relationships and provide a firmer basis for dating and production patterns. These effigies are considered in the context of the historical and material culture of the region at the time of their creation. By closely examining the visible evidence afforded by the monuments and their surroundings, the study aims to gain a deeper understanding of the sculptor's intentions and the aspirations of their patrons.

The corpus of effigies is substantial enough to enable meaningful analysis, shedding light on various aspects such as personal aspiration, social networks, patterns of supply and production, piety, and wealth. This study demonstrates the value of funerary monuments in understanding medieval society. Furthermore, a comprehensive catalogue will accompany the text, making a substantial body of research available for the first time. The study also explores the relationship between the monuments and related sculpture, architecture, painting, glass, and contemporary documentary evidence, where available.

Overall, this study provides a comprehensive and insightful examination of the monumental effigies of Yorkshire, contributing to our understanding of medieval society and culture.
