- More about Iran Air
In August 1961, Iranian Airways and Persian Air Services merged to form United Iranian Airlines. A few months later, the Iranian government formed Iran National Airline Corporation, taking over operations from United Iranian Airlines. The airline entered the jet age with Boeing 727s and later purchased Boeing 737s, 707s, 747s, and 747SPs for domestic and international flights. The Shah of Iran ordered the French Concorde, which was canceled after the Revolution. Domestic and international passenger numbers went down due to the Revolution and Iran-Iraq war, and the Iranian government decided to end the monopoly status of Iran.

In August 1961, a historic merger took place between Iranian Airways and Persian Air Services, resulting in the formation of United Iranian Airlines. However, just a few months later, the Iranian government issued an order creating Iran National Airline Corporation, which assumed control of operations from United Iranian Airlines. This marked a significant turning point in the airline's history, as it entered the era of jet travel. To meet the demands of its expanding route network, the airline acquired a fleet of Boeing 727s, which flew to major cities across Europe and the Persian Gulf region. As the airline continued to evolve, it added Boeing 737s for domestic flights and Boeing 707s for semi-long-haul journeys. Eventually, the airline's fleet expanded further with the acquisition of Boeing 747s and Boeing 747SPs, specifically for the non-stop Tehran-New York route.
In addition to its fleet modernization, United Iranian Airlines also made headlines for another significant order. The Shah of Iran, at the time, placed an order for the French Concorde, a cutting-edge aircraft that was renowned for its speed and luxury. However, this order was abruptly canceled shortly after the Revolution that swept Iran in 1979. The Revolution and the Iran-Iraq war had a profound impact on the airline industry, leading to a decline in domestic and international passenger numbers. After the war ended, the Iranian government decided to end the monopoly status of Iran and open up the aviation sector to competition.
This book, meticulously researched and fully illustrated with over 140 images, offers a comprehensive account of Iran's national carrier, tracing its journey from its early years to the present day. It explores the challenges and triumphs faced by United Iranian Airlines, as well as its role in shaping the aviation industry in Iran and the region. Whether you are an aviation enthusiast, a history buff, or simply interested in learning more about the fascinating story of Iran's national carrier, this book is a must-read.
