Subaltern studies emphasize the significance of subordinate groups in shaping historical narratives. Typically, these groups include the urban and rural underclasses, constituting the majority in any society, although the term is often used to refer to all non-elites, including women. The discourse often centers on instances of social protest, where the subalterns use their voices to respond to or even challenge the manipulations of the elite. This book draws from a diverse range of sources, including elite Persian diplomatic and political-economic materials, as well as cultural spheres such as art, architecture, prose, poetry, and religious materials (Sunni, Shi`i, and Sufi) in various relevant languages. The project aims to explore the attitudes of the authors of these sources toward the subaltern and identify problems in accessing/using the sources. Additionally, it seeks to establish an ongoing network to chart pathways for further associated research projects and provide support for these endeavors.
