  • More about Jacqui Hallum - Workings and Showings

Jacqui Hallum is a London-born,Devon-based artist known for her mixed-media paintings on textiles, which incorporate imagery and visual languages from medieval woodcuts to Art Nouveau children's illustrations. She often leaves the fabrics in the open air to introduce weathering into the works, and her paintings are charged with delight in color, line, surface, and composition in unconventional ways. This is the first monograph on Hallum, documenting her solo exhibition at The Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, and a series of solo, two-person, and group exhibitions held between 2014 and 2020. The publication features newly commissioned essays by arts journalist and critic Hettie Judah and by Andrew Hunt, Professor of Fine Art and Curating at the University of Manchester.

Hallum's paintings are a vibrant celebration of color, line, surface, and composition, taking unconventional approaches that evoke sheer delight. This comprehensive monograph is the first dedicated to the London-born, Devon-based artist Jacqui Hallum. It encompasses a comprehensive examination of Hallum's solo exhibition at The Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, which ran from October 10, 2019, to March 1, 2020, as well as a series of solo, two-person, and group exhibitions held between 2014 and 2020.

Hallum's artistic prowess is particularly evident in her mixed-media paintings on textiles, a technique she has honed and refined over two decades since completing her studies. Her artwork incorporates a diverse range of imagery and visual languages, spanning from medieval woodcuts and stained-glass windows to Art Nouveau children's illustrations, tarot cards, and Berber rugs. Through the use of ink staining, painting, drawing, and printing, Hallum creates intricate layers of pattern, abstraction, and figurative imagery. A unique aspect of her working process is her practice of leaving the fabrics exposed to the elements, allowing them to weather over time, further enhancing the painterly palimpsests that carry a sense of the past into the present.

Hallum's paintings explore a wide array of themes, including history, religion, mysticism, and the beliefs and creativity of past civilizations. These themes intertwine, often literally, as pieces of fabrics are layered, pinned, draped, and hung together to form painterly palimpsests that carry a timeless quality. The publication features a foreword by Professor Caroline Wilkinson, Director of the School of Art and Design at Liverpool John Moores University, and an introductory essay by artist, curator, and director of Kingsgate Workshops and Project Space in London, Dan Howard-Birt. Additionally, the publication includes newly commissioned essays by arts journalist and critic Hettie Judah and by Andrew Hunt, Professor of Fine Art and Curating at the University of Manchester.

This monograph offers a deep insight into Hallum's artistic journey, showcasing her exceptional talent and innovative approach to painting. It serves as a valuable resource for art enthusiasts, scholars, and collectors alike, providing a comprehensive examination of her work and its significance in the contemporary art world.
