In a future where ships can fold space and much of humanity has abandoned its depleted world, two forces vie for control of what's left of the Earth, known space, and the universe beyond. Government and Corporation, two powerful entities, are locked in a fierce battle for dominance. Government, in an attempt to curb Corporate power, has recently insisted on paying wages to Gene-spliced human-animal hybrid assets known as Hyperbreed, who are created and programmed to do their Corporate masters bidding. This move has sparked a debate about a bill that would allow Hyperbreed assets to buy their freedom. Corporate, however, will stop at nothing to prevent this from happening.

On the edge of explored space, a race of alien robot pirates exists, terrifying monsters who wear the body parts of vanquished flesh-and-blood enemies as trophies. These alien robot pirates, known as Maks, are preparing for an attack on Earth, and their agenda is set. Caught in the middle of this impending threat are Byrr, Fext, and Cammo, three Hyperbreed assets who have run afoul of their Corporate masters. Thrown together on an ancient freighter, their mission is to transport valuable Explosive Ore to a distant mining colony. However, their mission is far from what it seems, and the battle for their futures and the future of Known Space is about to begin.

In the vastness of space, small betrayals can have major consequences, playing the odds can change the course of history, and Luck isn't always what it seems. Byrr, Fext, and Cammo, three Hyperbreed assets, find themselves at the center of a web of intrigue and danger. As they navigate through the treacherous waters of space, they must rely on each other and their wits to survive. With the fate of the universe hanging in the balance, they must uncover the truth behind the Maks attack and prevent it from happening.

As they journey through space, they encounter a variety of challenges and obstacles, including rival factions, dangerous pirates, and even their own Corporate masters. Each character has their own unique skills and abilities, which they must use to their advantage in order to survive. Along the way, they also learn about the history of the Maks and the secrets of the universe beyond.

In the end, Byrr, Fext, and Cammo must make difficult choices and face their own demons in order to save the universe and their own futures. They must learn to trust each other and work together to overcome the odds, even if it means risking everything they have. The fate of Known Space and the universe beyond hangs in the balance, and it will take all of their courage and skill to save it.
