John Cruso of Norwich, born in 1592 or 1593, was a remarkable individual who hailed from a second-generation migrant family. He possessed a diverse range of talents, including being a Dutch and English poet, translator, military author, virtuoso networker, successful merchant, and hosier. Additionally, he held positions as a Dutch church elder and militia captain. This comprehensive book-length biography, drawing upon extensive archival and literary sources, aims to reconstruct the life and work of this multifaceted and self-made man. Cruso's literary oeuvre is characterized by its polyvocality, encompassing a Dutch amplification of Psalm 8, a collection of 221 Dutch epigrams, and elegies, including one that played a significant role in the Anglo-Dutch literary scene during the seventeenth century. As a military author, Cruso published five works in English, including two translations from French. These works showcased his profound knowledge of classical and Renaissance literature, enabling him to position himself as a learned soldier and contribute to military science in England, particularly during the English Civil Wars.

In exploring the rich and varied life and works of John Cruso, this book also delves into the ideas and practices of identity formation in the early modern period. Furthermore, it sheds light on Cruso's life, providing valuable insights into the migrant experience in seventeenth-century Norwich. Joby's work demonstrates how a second-generation migrant could successfully integrate into English society while maintaining strong connections to his Dutch heritage. Cruso's life serves as a testament to the adaptability and resilience of individuals navigating the complexities of cultural and social transitions.
