This is the twenty-first volume in the Clarendon Edition of the Works of John Locke, a series dedicated to presenting authoritative critical editions of all the writings of one of the most influential intellectuals in the early-modern Anglophone world. The present volume, completed by the late E. S. de Beer, spans the Correspondence edited by de Beer, which was published between 1976 and 1989. It encompasses a vast collection of approximately 300 documents, including newly discovered or augmented letters by or to Locke, as well as letters between his close associates. These letters have been sourced from archives worldwide, with previously known letters undergoing improvements from new manuscripts or supplemented by enclosures that had become detached. Epistles dedicatory in books by Locke or addressed to him have been gathered, as have third-party letters with direct relevance to Locke's life and work. Additionally, the volume includes Locke's agreements with publishers for the printing of his books.
Spanning a wide range of interests, from childrearing to medicine to cartography, from patronage to the political economy of England's burgeoning empire, from tenant management to relations with fellow philosopher Damaris Masham, from a trial for heresy to surveillance letters during periods of suspicion, from book collecting to calendrical reform, Locke's life and work are explored in this comprehensive volume.
It also sheds light on his encounters with Carolina and his policies as a founding member of the Board of Trade and Plantations. Mark Goldie's introduction provides valuable insights, while an extensive explanatory editorial apparatus enhances the reader's understanding of the texts.
The Clarendon Edition of the Works of John Locke continues to be a vital resource for scholars and enthusiasts of early modern philosophy and intellectual history.
