This collection of essays pays tribute to Lord Kerr of Tonaghmore, who passed away at the age of 72 on December 1, 2020, just two months after retiring from the United Kingdom Supreme Court. In 1993, Brian Kerr was appointed as a judge of the High Court of Northern Ireland. He assumed the position of Lord Chief Justice of Northern Ireland in 2004 and later received a peerage, culminating in his appointment as the last Lord of Appeal in Ordinary in June 2009. Four months later, as Lord Kerr, he transitioned from the Appellate Committee of the House of Lords to the UK Supreme Court, where he served for 11 years, making him the longest-serving justice to date. Throughout his career, Lord Kerr established an exceptional reputation for his independence of thought, fairness, and humanitarianism. His judicial mind has inspired and influenced numerous scholars and jurists throughout the United Kingdom and beyond. In this book, his unique brand of jurisprudence is examined alongside a comprehensive catalog of broader issues in which he displayed a keen interest throughout his lifetime. The volume includes topical contributions from a diverse range of legal experts in Britain and Ireland. Lord Kerr's particular interest in public law, human rights law, criminal law, and family law is prominently featured, as is the significance of his dissenting judgments, influential jurisprudence of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council (where he sat on numerous occasions), the legacy of his influence on the law and legal system of Northern Ireland, and the importance of his place in the historical development of judicial roles and responsibilities more broadly.
