  • More about Kandis Williams

Williams uses her experience in dramaturgy to create a space that embraces the biopolitical economies of movement. Her artwork explores the connections between popular culture, myth, anatomy, the Black diaspora, communication, and obfuscation, shaping an alternative language that examines how Black moving bodies are perceived. The book, curated by Ebony L. Haynes and featuring contributions by artists Hannah Black and Okwui Okpokwasili, extends the exhibition and includes high-quality illustrations and archival materials. The Clarion series, inspired by the Clarion Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Workshop, aims to showcase conceptual and research-based artists from diverse backgrounds.

Drawing on her extensive background in dramaturgy, Williams imagines a space that seamlessly accommodates the intricate biopolitical economies that shape our understanding of movement. By delving into the interconnections between popular culture and myth, she explores the complex anatomy of the Black diaspora, the nuances of communication, and the strategies of obfuscation in her artistic endeavors.

Williams' remarkable body of work not only establishes an alternative language but also sheds light on the pervasive societal perceptions of Black moving bodies. Through her artistic lens, she exposes the inexpressible violence that these bodies have endured, both within the realm of dance and beyond.

This captivating book, featuring insightful contributions from the curator of 52 Walker, a David Zwirner gallery space, Ebony L. Haynes, as well as the artist and writer Hannah Black, and a stirring conversation between Williams and the choreographer Okwui Okpokwasili, serves as an extension of the exhibition itself. The book is adorned with high-quality illustrations of the showcased artworks, accompanied by a wealth of rich archival materials.

The Clarion series of illustrated publications, curated by Ebony L. Haynes, stands as an extension of each exhibition at the groundbreaking gallery space 52 Walker. With a focus on showcasing conceptual and research-based artists from diverse backgrounds and stages of their careers, the series draws its name from the renowned Clarion Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Workshop, the oldest of its kind at the University of California, San Diego. Notably, Octavia Butler, a prominent figure in Black culture and subculture, attended this workshop in the 1970s, leaving an indelible impact on her work and the broader Black community.

Each publication in the Clarion series boasts a sleek design inspired by encyclopedias, presenting color reproductions of the artworks on view alongside an introduction by Haynes. Commissioned essays, artist texts, archival material, and other enriching content further enhance the reader's experience, making these publications a valuable resource for art enthusiasts and scholars alike.

By delving into the complexities of biopolitics, myth, culture, and movement, Williams' artistic vision challenges societal norms and encourages us to reimagine the ways in which we perceive and engage with Black bodies in our world. Through her work, she creates a space for dialogue, reflection, and growth, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of the rich tapestry of Black experiences.
