A cultural history of nature may seem paradoxical at first glance, but a closer examination reveals its cleverness. Despite our tendency to view nature and culture as opposing forces, they are inextricably intertwined. This is precisely what Klaus Littman demonstrates in his remarkable project, Tree Connections. In 2019, approximately three hundred trees were planted on the pitch at the Wörthersee football stadium in Klagenfurt. The outcome is an extraordinary experience of witnessing a clash between two seemingly distinct types of spaces. By seamlessly blending the natural and constructed worlds, their boundaries become blurred, rendering them practically indistinguishable. Simultaneously, the breathtaking views of this unique project provide fascinating insights into our current, unsustainable ideas and activities.

To further explore this concept, an exhibition curated by Littmann will be held at the Basel H. Geiger Kulturstiftung in May 2021. The exhibition will feature works by renowned artists such as Alexandre Calame, Joseph Beuys, Christo, Jannis Kounellis, Giuseppe Penone, Günther Uecker, Tony Cragg, Michael Sailstorfer, Miriam Cahn, and Sol LeWitt, among others.

Through their artistic expressions, these artists challenge our perceptions of nature and culture, urging us to reevaluate our relationship with the natural world. Tree Connections serves as a reminder that we are not separate from nature but rather an integral part of it. By embracing this interconnectedness, we can strive towards a more sustainable and harmonious future.
