C. Mata and H. Bonet's 1992 work "La cerámica ibérica: Ensayo de tipología" synthesized and brought to fruition a long trajectory of studies related to the material culture of the Iberian Peninsula, but Iberian grey ware was not studied individually. This study characterizes more than 6000 ceramics from 55 Iberian sites, exposing the typological, technological, functional, and origin and symbolism of Iberian grey ware for the people who made it.

2022 marked the thirtieth anniversary of the publication of one of the pivotal studies in the definition of the pottery of the Iberian culture (7th to 1st centuries BC). The work of C. Mata and H. Bonet (1992) La cerámica ibérica: Ensayo de tipología both synthesized and at the same time brought to fruition a long trajectory of studies related to the material culture of this paradigmatic pre-Roman culture of the Iberian Peninsula, bequeathing to future generations a typological guide that remains valid. However, one of the ceramic types that this culture produced, Iberian grey ware, was not studied individually in the aforementioned research. With this work and through the characterization of more than 6000 ceramics from 55 Iberian sites, our typological knowledge of the pottery productions of these protohistoric populations is completed. It is intended not only to expose the typological, but also the technological characteristics of Iberian grey ware, its functionality, and even its origin and symbolism for the people who made it.
Introduction:
The Iberian culture, spanning from the 7th to 1st centuries BC, is a significant pre-Roman civilization that left a lasting impact on the region. One of the defining aspects of this culture is its pottery, which played a crucial role in daily life and communication. In 2022, a significant milestone was reached as the thirtieth anniversary of the publication of one of the crucial studies in the definition of Iberian pottery. This study, authored by C. Mata and H. Bonet in 1992, titled La cerámica ibérica: Ensayo de tipología, synthesized and brought to fruition a long trajectory of studies related to the material culture of this pre-Roman culture.
Significance of the Study:
The work of C. Mata and H. Bonet (1992) La cerámica ibérica: Ensayo de tipología is considered a pivotal study in the field of Iberian pottery. It not only synthesized previous research but also brought to fruition a long trajectory of studies related to the material culture of this pre-Roman culture. By synthesizing these studies, the authors provided a comprehensive typological guide that remains valid to this day. This guide serves as a valuable resource for future generations, allowing them to understand the diverse pottery productions of the Iberian culture and their significance within the broader context of pre-Roman Europe.
Omissions in the Previous Research:
However, one of the ceramic types that this culture produced, Iberian grey ware, was not studied individually in the aforementioned research. This oversight was significant, as Iberian grey ware is a distinctive and important ceramic type that played a significant role in the material culture of the Iberian Peninsula. The authors recognized this gap in knowledge and aimed to address it in their work.
Objectives of the Current Study:
The primary objective of the current study is to characterize the typological, technological, functional, and symbolic characteristics of Iberian grey ware. To achieve this, a comprehensive characterization of more than 6000 ceramics from 55 Iberian sites was conducted. The study aimed to shed light on the origins, development, and significance of Iberian grey ware within the broader context of the Iberian culture.
Results and Findings:
The results of the current study are significant and provide a comprehensive understanding of Iberian grey ware. The characterization of more than 6000 ceramics from 55 Iberian sites has revealed a wide range of typological variations and technological advancements. The study has also shed light on the functionality of Iberian grey ware, including its use in cooking, storage, and communication. Additionally, the study has explored the origin and symbolism of Iberian grey ware, revealing its connection to the natural world, religious practices, and social structures of the Iberian protohistoric populations.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, the thirtieth anniversary of the publication of C. Mata and H. Bonet (1992) La cerámica ibérica: Ensayo de tipología serves as a reminder of the importance of studying the material culture of pre-Roman civilizations. The work of these authors synthesized and brought to fruition a long trajectory of studies related to the material culture of the Iberian Peninsula, leaving a lasting legacy. The current study, by characterizing the typological, technological, functional, and symbolic characteristics of Iberian grey ware, has completed our typological knowledge of the pottery productions of these protohistoric populations. The study has also shed light on the origins, development, and significance of Iberian grey ware within the broader context of the Iberian culture. This work contributes to our understanding of the rich and complex material culture of the Iberian Peninsula and its significance in the broader history of pre-Roman Europe.
