La ciudad de Recópolis es la máxima manifestación de la arquitectura y urbanismo de época visigoda en la península Ibérica. Se trata de un conjunto de 30 hectáreas formado por un complejo palatino, una monumental muralla, talleres de vidrio y de orfebrería, así como un urbanismo de fuerte influencia bizantina. Fundada por el rey Leovigildo en el año 578, se trata de un ejemplo de “imitación imperial” de los símbolos de poder mediterráneos. El descubrimiento arqueológico del yacimiento se produjo entre 1944-1945, marcado por la recuperación de un singular conjunto numismático de monedas de oro. A lo largo de las páginas, el lector se adentrará en las complejas circunstancias del hallazgo monetario, un unicum numismático del periodo inicial del gobierno del rey Leovigildo, y en la caracterización del tesoro, dotado de elementos simbólicos y rituales singulares.
