Jehan Creton's account of Richard II's expedition to Ireland in 1399, which contradicts the official version of events in the Parliamentary Roll, is of crucial importance for historians. This edition includes Creton's other known writings, a complete translation, and quality reproductions of the original miniatures.
Format: Hardback
Length: 480 pages
Publication date: 31 July 2023
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
In 1399, Jehan Creton accompanied King Richard II on his expedition to Ireland, where he bore witness to the capture of the king by Henry Lancaster, who usurped the throne and assumed the title of Henry IV. Creton's account holds immense significance for historians of the era, as it contradicts the official version of events documented in the Parliamentary Roll. Until now, scholars have relied on a 200-year-old edition by an antiquarian, the Rev. Webb's edition of 1824, which possesses the inherent limitations of a publication from that time. In this volume, Creton's other known writings, consisting of two epistles and four ballades, are presented for the first time. Additionally, the editors have identified Creton's debt to Valerius Maximus in his epistle to the Duke of Burgundy, a revelation that sheds new light on his literary influences. A comprehensive translation has been provided, accompanied by high-quality reproductions of the original miniatures that Creton meticulously specified as an essential component of his work.
