The prevailing assumption among economic historians has been that labor in Western Europe became liberated following the abolition of serfdom in the fifteenth century. However, this assumption is now being scrutinized, and it is becoming evident that labor laws played a significant role in impeding workers' freedom. This groundbreaking collection is the first to examine labor laws across Western Europe from a longer-term perspective, spanning several centuries. It is an interdisciplinary endeavor, drawing upon studies in social, political, economic, and legal history.

While elements of labor legislation emerged prior to the Black Death, they were notably reinforced afterward, particularly in regions experiencing labor scarcity. The collection specifically concentrates on the rural economy during the late medieval and early modern periods. It presents a series of studies that introduce diverse approaches to labor regulation and the concept of labor across Europe. Notably, this collection offers insightful observations on the impact of labor laws on everyday social relations. The methods employed to regulate work and labor exhibited significant variations across different regions. In some instances, these attempts amounted to mere wishful thinking on the part of regional authorities. Conversely, in other regions, labor laws imposed severe limitations on individual freedoms.
