  • More about Last Years of Steam Around North Wales: From the Photographic Archive of Ellis James-Robertson

This book contains a collection of mostly unpublished color and black-and-white photographs from Robert Ellis James-Robertson's archives, covering the mid-1950s to the mid-1960s. It appeals to railway enthusiasts, modellers, and those interested in local history, with a focus on steam-powered trains in North Wales. Robert Ellis James-Robertson, known as Ellis, was a Welsh-born photographer who lived in Worcester and built a large railway collection. His photographs were published in books and magazines in the 1960s, and this book is created from his North Wales archives. The collection includes BR standard-gauge lines and the narrow-gauge Penrhyn and Padarn slate systems. Ellis and his wife celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary in 2013, and he passed away in 2015 at the age of 92. His daughters have collaborated with film-maker and author Michael Clemens to publish this book and continue to share his photographic archive through film shows.

Ellis, a Welshman by birth, resided in Worcester from the mid-1950s onwards, embarking on extensive travels throughout the country to amass a substantial railway collection. During the 1960s, a handful of Ellis' photographs found their way into books and magazines, earning him recognition. This book, consisting primarily of unpublished color and black-and-white images, has been meticulously curated from Ellis' extensive North Wales archives. It holds great appeal to railway enthusiasts, modelers, and those with an interest in local history. The depicted period spans from the mid-1950s to the mid-1960s, with steam serving as the predominant mode of propulsion. Extensive coverage of North Wales is evident, encompassing both the BR standard-gauge lines and the narrow-gauge Penrhyn and Padarn slate systems. Ellis and his wife, Norah, celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary in 2013, and Ellis passed away in April 2015 at the age of 92. His daughters, Louisa and Fiona, reached out to film-maker and author Michael Clemens, whose late father had been a close friend of Ellis. Today, Ellis' collection continues to thrive through film shows presented by the author, and it is now showcased in this second installment of a series of books utilizing his photographic archive.
