Le novità introdotte nell’Europa del Settecento dal romanzo sono spesso veicolate in Italia dal teatro: non solo vengono trasposte sulle scene le vicende di Pamela o di Marianna, ma, a partire da Goldoni, si elabora una drammaturgia che – in linea con i più avanzati esperimenti romanzeschi e attraverso il recupero della funzione che il teatro aveva già nelle poetiche antiche – mette da parte gli schematismi della tradizione dell’arte per catturare lettori e spettatori tramite storie in cui è facile immedesimarsi. Parallelamente, la narrativa italiana attinge al teatro come tema privilegiato, come mezzo di giocose sperimentazioni o come modello per l’elaborazione di un romanzo tragico.
