In 1929, renowned architect Eileen Gray designed Villa E 1027, a stunning residence in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, southern France, for herself and her young partner Jean Badovici. However, their stay at the villa was brief, lasting only three years. Today, the elegant house, a testament to modernism, stands as an iconic symbol of architectural excellence.

In 1937, the visionary architect Le Corbusier stumbled upon this remarkable place and the Maison en Bord de Mer. Enchanted by the sheer brilliance of the location and the captivating light of the Côte d'Azur, he embarked on a creative journey, creating a total of five large-format wall paintings within the premises from 1938 onwards. Some of these paintings harmoniously complement the architectural structure, while others serve as contrasting elements.

In 1952, Le Corbusier constructed his Cabanon, a neighboring building, and adorned it with captivating murals. The book authored by renowned architectural historian Tim Benton, delves into Le Corbusier's artistic endeavors at this extraordinary place and contextualizes them within his comprehensive body of work.

The captivating photographs by Manuel Bougot beautifully portray the unique ambiance of the villa. While Le Corbusier's painting may be less well-known, it played a significant role in shaping his lifelong fascination with polychromy.

After extensive restoration work spanning several years, Villa E 1027 and the Cabanon have reopened to the public, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the architectural marvels and appreciate the artistic contributions of Le Corbusier.
