This books focusses on Iron Age glassmaking through a socio-economic perspective. To do so,a multidisciplinary method has been established, combining archaeological data with archaeometry and technological approaches developed with modern glassmakers. It allows us to reconstruct, step by step, the commodity chain of this craft, only dedicated to beads and bangles productions, from the raw glass production, its transformation into items of adornments but also its distribution and its consumption processes by La Tène societies. By reconstructing this production system, the social and symbolic values of these ornaments can be better understood. Glass beads and bangles are luxury products and their consumption evolved alongside the hierarchisation of La Tène societies. This new research on La Tène Glass reveals conspicuous consumption practises depending on the organisation of goods networks with the Near East, but also specialised craftspeople and production structures only dedicated to the production of objects used for the distinction of individuals.

During the last four centuries, the European societies of the La Tène culture developed their unique glassmaking craft. This period of significant economic and social transformations saw the expansion of urban centers and hierarchical housing networks. Alongside this growth, there was an increase and diversification in artisanal and agricultural production. From agriculture to metallurgy, the study of Latin artisanal specializations reveals profound technical and economic changes and identifies the factors that drove these socio-economic transformations.
Primarily used for body ornamentation, Celtic glassmaking produced exquisite pearls and bracelets. Traditionally viewed as feminine or child-like, these objects are now examined from an economic and social perspective. A comprehensive multidisciplinary approach, combining contextual object study, material analysis, and techniques with skilled glassmakers, has allowed for a holistic understanding of these objects throughout their production chain. From the raw glass production in the Proche-Orient to the adornment of Celtic populations, the study of Celtic glass jewelry reveals trade networks and craftsmanship developed by these societies. This reevaluation of Latin glassmaking sheds light on the values and functions of these ornate pieces, reclassifying them as prestigious social ornaments, but also acknowledging their evolving production and consumption alongside societal hierarchization.
