- More about Leading the Vulnerable and The Mighty: Dr Margaret Mungherera
Margaret was a remarkable woman who achieved great things in her life. She was a leader in gender equality, universal health access, and the welfare of health workers. Despite facing unexpected leadership opportunities, she rose to the challenge and proved to be a dynamic and transformational leader. She was the first woman President of the Ugandan Medical Association, the first African woman President of the World Medical Association, and the first Ugandan woman Rotary Country Chair. She also initiated the Hope After Rape charity in the aftermath of brutal civil wars. Despite her many achievements, she had unfulfilled ambitions to be Ugandas first Forensic Psychiatrist.

Margaret was a remarkable individual, brimming with optimism and a delightful sense of humor. She tirelessly championed gender equality, universal health access, and the well-being of healthcare workers. Unexpected leadership opportunities presented themselves to her, and she fearlessly embraced these challenges, emerging as a dynamic and transformative leader during her tenure.
Growing up as the eldest of six siblings, Margaret excelled in her academic pursuits, earning the title of prefect in all her schools. Her remarkable journey continued as she became the first woman President of the Ugandan Medical Association, the first African woman President of the World Medical Association, the first Ugandan woman Rotary Country Chair, and the first African President Elect of the International Association Medical Regulatory Authorities. Regrettably, her unfulfilled ambition was to become Uganda's first Forensic Psychiatrist.
In the aftermath of brutal civil wars that inflicted immense harm on women and girls, Margaret initiated Hope After Rape, a charity dedicated to providing support and healing to those affected. The 1980s and 1990s witnessed a relentless cycle of insecurity, profoundly impacting the mental health of the people. Strange phenomena emerged, including the fierce rivalry between Priestess Alice Lakwena and her Holy Spirit Movement, the notorious warlord Joseph Kony and his armed Lords Resistance Army, who launched nighttime attacks on villages, perpetrating acts of murder, maiming, and kidnapping. Thousands of lives were tragically lost, and the mental well-being of countless individuals was shattered. Mental health services faced severe underfunding, leaving Margaret with the daunting task of keeping mental healthcare staff motivated and inspired to continue their crucial work.
As a renowned Rotarian, Margaret served as Country Chair for 70 Rotary Clubs. At the pinnacle of her achievements, having recently taken early retirement, her sights were set on the IAMRA presidency. However, her journey was abruptly halted when she received a devastating diagnosis of colon cancer. Despite her unwavering belief in universal health access, Margaret's illness tested her resilience and determination. She faced her illness with unwavering courage, continuing to advocate for the rights of healthcare workers and the importance of universal health coverage.
Margaret's life was a testament to her unwavering spirit, her unwavering commitment to social justice, and her unwavering pursuit of equality. Her legacy continues to inspire and empower individuals around the world, reminding us of the power of one person to make a difference and to create a better world for all.
