Leading with the Chin: Negotiating Masculinity in American Literature
James Baldwin, Truman Capote, Raymond Carver, Don DeLillo, Norman Mailer, and Tim OBrien are the focus of Leading with the Chin, which examines how these authors addressed significant changes in American masculinity. By using the works of these six authors as case studies, the book contends that Esquire allowed writers to challenge national conceptions of American masculinity as they were influenced by the rise of neoliberalism, civil rights and gay rights, and the cultural dominance of the professional-managerial class. The book employs periodical studies methodologies and masculinity studies theoretical concerns to re-contextualize the prose and fiction of these authors by analyzing them in the material context of the magazine. It demonstrates that Esquire reflected and contributed to shaping the forces that shaped American masculinity in the twentieth century by relating each author's articulation of masculinity to the advertisements, editorials, and articles published in each issue.
