Das Lehnswesen galt lange Zeit als zentrales Ordnungssystem, das das gesamte Mittelalter durchzog. Das daraus abgeleitete wissenschaftliche Modell - zugespitzt in der sogenannten Lehnspyramide - diente selbst dann noch zur Erklärung von Ereignissen, Strukturen und Prozessen, wenn belastbare Quellenbelege fehlten. Mit dem Erscheinen von Susan Reynolds' Werk zu Fiefs and Vassals im Jahr 1994 wurde diese Meistererzählung grundsätzlich in Frage gestellt. Die seitdem bezogenen Positionen reichen vom Festhalten am Althergebrachten über zahlreiche Vorschläge zu Modifizierung bis hin zur grundsätzlichen Infragestellung der Existenz des Lehnswesens. Diese ebenso vielfältige wie produktive Debatte findet im vorliegenden Sammelband ihre Fortsetzung - mit einem besonderen Fokus auf das spätmittelalterliche Nord- und Mitteleuropa sowie auf die Verflechtungen des Lehnswesens mit Geld- und Verwaltungswesen.
