The renowned Lion Monument in Lucerne, nestled within a picturesque park in the city's center, pays tribute to the Swiss Guards who served under the French King Louis XVI during the tumultuous storming of the Tuileries Palace in Paris on August 10, 1792. Crafted meticulously by the Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen, according to a design that seamlessly integrates with the natural rockface, the monument was officially inaugurated on August 10, 1821. Today, alongside the nearby Glacier Garden, it stands as one of the most captivating tourist attractions in Switzerland.

In celebration of the monument's bicentenary, the Kunsthalle Lucerne initiated the Lion Monument 21 program, a series of exhibitions, performances, podium discussions, and interdisciplinary events. Spanning from 2017 to 2021, this program approached the monument from an artistic perspective, exploring a diverse range of artistic stances and connecting it to various themes.

To document and preserve the essence of this remarkable project, this book presents a comprehensive collection of over 400 images, texts, and conversations. It serves as a socially responsible reference book for the artistic contextualization of monuments, recording and reflecting on the insights gained from the Lion Monument 21 project. The text is available in both English and German, making it accessible to a broad international audience.
